SECTION 508 AND YOU
Is your website and applications handicapped accessible? Do you realize that just like a physical building, your websites need to be compatible for individuals with disabilities. For example, will sight-impaired people be able to navigate through using a screen reader? What about people who are only able to use their keyboards? Do you realize that if your website is not accessible, you can be held financially responsible for those changes?
joeFREELANCE has significant experience in creating 508 compliant online (and offline) content. One thing to note- there is no real way to guarantee that content is 508 compliant. The US Government has still not set any solid testing/certification processes, however we have done our due diligence to cover and apply all the suggested issues.
Click HEREfor the joeFREELANCE 508 Compliance Checklist. This checklist contains a breakdown of 508 requirements and notes on what we have done to apply these requirenments to websites and applications.
Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or would like training on how to develop 508-compliant content for the web.
Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM)
Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) is an XML-based framework used to define and access information about learning objects so they can be easily shared among different learning management systems (LMSs). SCORM was developed in response to a United States Department of Defense (DoD) initiative to promote standardization in e-learning.
So what's this SCORM thing mean to you?
Well, it means that if you have joeFREELANCE design (or re-design) your e-learning, cbt, or distance-learning application, you can be assured that if requested, we can make sure that it is fully SCORM conformant, thus working and communicating with whatever LMS you choose to use.
FROM SECTION508.gov:
“In 1998, Congress amended the Rehabilitation Act to require Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities. Inaccessible technology interferes with an individual's ability to obtain and use information quickly and easily. Section 508 was enacted to eliminate barriers in information technology, to make available new opportunities for people with disabilities, and to encourage development of technologies that will help achieve these goals. The law applies to all Federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology. Under Section 508 (29 U.S.C. ‘ 794d), agencies must give disabled employees and members of the public access to information that is comparable to the access available to others.”
