What is it? It has many names, E-Learning, Computer-Based Training, Distance Learning, Web-Based Training, Interactive Learning Technology, and more. These methods of teaching and learning through the Internet and/or CD/DVD are defined as: "A type of training in which a student learns a particular application by using special programs on a computer. Sometimes referred to as "CAI" (Computer-Assisted Instruction) or "CBI" (Computer-Based Instruction), although these two terms may also be used to describe a computer program used to assist a teacher or trainer in classroom instruction..."Here at joeFREELANCE, we know CBT. We know that EVERY SINGLE fortune 500 corporation uses some type of E-Learning Computer-Based Training in their daily activities.
Why do so many corporations use E-Learning CBT? It comes down to money. New employee training is reduced from a week-long process involving trainers, and hours of labor to a simple CD-ROM or login on a website. The US Military had moved from traditional trainers to a E-Learning CBT-based means of disseminating education. If a radio operator left the field with an injury, the old method involved sending a trainer from the states to train the replacement. Now they just send a CD. (InsideTraining, 2004)Studies have also shown that E-Learning CBT-based learning has a 82% heigher retention level at the first month, and a 61% higher retention at the 6-month mark, when compared to traditional classroom training. (Technology&Learning, 2003)
Since the proliferation of E-Learning and CBT application content, there has been a demand for ways to manage the learning objects. This is where LMS and LCMS' (Learning Content Management Systems) have come into use. These online applications allow for reusability of learning objects, thus reducing the overall costs involved in creating, and maintaining e-learning programs.
